Here are the 2020 Forest of Reading Award Winners!
The votes are in! Over 270,000 readers have participated in the Ontario Library Association’s (OLA) annual Forest of Reading program and have helped to choose the best Canadian authors and illustrators. These awards were presented today at the online Forest of Reading Festival, streamed on Curio in partnership with CBC Books. Congratulations to the winners!
The Forest of Reading is Canada's largest recreational reading program! This initiative of the Ontario Library Association offers reading programs to encourage a love of reading in people of all ages. The Forest helps celebrate Canadian books, publishers, authors and illustrators. More than 250,000 readers participate annually.
Join us as we celebrate amazing Canadian books through the Forest of Reading program. Blue Spruce, Silver Birch Express, Silver Birch Fiction,Yellow Cedar, Red Maple, White Pine, Le prix Peuplier, Le prix Mélèze, Le prix Tamarac books will be on display and available for check out at all library branches.
Blue Spruce Award
The Blue Spruce Award program brings recently published Canadian children's picture books to children ages 4 to 7 in junior kindergarten through to grade two. For many children, this is their first introduction to the world of books.

Silver Birch Express Award
The Silver Birch Award is comprised of fiction and non-fiction titles and is geared to reluctant readers and is typically suited for Grades 3 and 4.

Silver Birch Fiction Award
The Silver Birch Awards is meant for readers aged 8 to 12 (Grades 3 to 6)

Yellow Cedar Award
For the 2020 program year, the Forest of Reading consolidated our two school-aged non-fiction programs, the Silver Birch Non-Fiction Award and the Red Maple Non-Fiction Award, into one award program - the Yellow Cedar Award. It is a curated list of 10 non-fiction titles (Grades 5 to 8)

The Red Maple Award
The Red Maple Award reading program is offered for the enjoyment of students ages 12 to 13, in Grades 7 and 8. This program includes a Fiction list every year. This program aims to get readers engaging in conversation around the books and encourages them to use critical thinking while reading.

White Pine Award
The White Pine Award reading program offers teens of all ages the opportunity to read the best of Canada's recent young fiction titles. This program promotes reading for enjoyment and familiarizes teenagers with great Canadian books (Grades 9 to 12).

Le prix Peuplier Award
Le prix Peuplier is a reading program that invites young people ot participate in read-alouds of French books written by Canadian authors. (picture books, less text, simpler subject matters, perfect for read-alouds)

Le prix Mélèze
(formerly le prix Tamarac Express)
This program invites young people to read by allowing them to vote for their favourite books (fiction and non-fiction) from a selection of the best Canadian books written in French. (Shorter chapter books maximum 100 pages or more mature picture books, larger text with pictures, simpler vocabulary and verb tenses)

Le prix Tamarac Award
Le prix Tamarac is a program that invites young people to read by allowing them to vote for their favourite books (fiction and non-fiction) from a selection of the best Canadian books written in French. (Chapter books from 10 to 250 pages, smaller text with little or no illustrations, more complicated verb tenses and vocabulary)
